Excellencies, distinguished participants,

We gather today to lead the way towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through multilateral cooperation. The existential challenges we face today cannot be solved by a global community drifting apart.

In a fracturing world, regional cooperation has a crucial role in building trust, bridging geopolitical differences, and bringing a common sense of purpose into play.

The partnerships with regional organizations such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the African Union Commission, the League of Arab States, and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States have brought about areas of complementarity between the 2030 Agenda and regional priorities.

This has allowed us, the UN regional commissions, to then translate them into concrete actions across countries.

To accelerate the necessary transformation for the SDGs at scale, our work is bringing stakeholders together in strengthening the science-policy interface to tackle climate change in collaboration with the League of Arab States and to convening city leaders through the Forum of Mayors in the UNECE region.

In Asia and the Pacific, the adoption of the Action Plan on Strengthening Regional Cooperation on Social Protection during the COVID-19 pandemic gives us an ambitious framework to work with the UN development system and countries in strengthening comprehensive social protection systems.

To advance the priorities of the Pacific, for example, we have been working with the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat under the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent in building climate resilience and sustainable financing for development.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, regional dialogues are amplifying collective commitments for gender equality through actions in the care system and innovative gender equality indicators.

Regional partnerships grounded in the 2030 Agenda give us the opportunity to bring regional and subregional stakeholders together. At the regional commissions, we are committed to be part of the efforts to facilitate dialogue to build consensus and turn this cooperation into actions on the ground.

Thank you!
