Regional Commemoration of International Women’s Day 2020

2020 is a pivotal year for advancing gender equality worldwide as the global community takes stock of the progress made for women’s rights. Despite some progress being made in the 25 years since the adoption of the landmark Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, real change remains agonizingly slow for the majority of women and girls in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Today, not a single country can claim to have achieved gender equality. At the current rate, it will take 99.5 years to realize equal rights for women and men, girls and boys everywhere.

On occasion of International Women’s Day (IWD) 2020, celebrated globally on 8 March, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific will organize an interactive dialogue under the global IWD theme “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights”. The dialogue will take place on 9 March in Bangkok and bring together young change-makers, key influencers, civil society and youth groups to exchange valuable experiences on how to strengthen advocacy efforts and youth-led movements advancing gender equality and women’s rights in the Asia-Pacific region.
