Crucial role of data for SDGS to be highlighted at 62nd World Statistics Congress

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will bring experiences from across the region in a series of events on big data, civil registration and vital statistics, governance statistics, wellbeing, geospatial applications, statistical literacy and measuring Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) progress at the 62nd International Statistical Institute (ISI) World Statistics Congress.

The ISI World Statistics Congress is the largest global forum for statisticians from governments, academia and business, and showcases the latest development in statistics. Over 2,500 participants are expected to participate in the 62nd session, which will be held from 18 to 23 August in Kuala Lumpur and hosted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia.

In conjunction with the Congress, ESCAP, as a member of the UN Global Working Group on Big Data, is supporting a Symposium on Data Science and Official Statistics from 15 to 17 August. Speakers from China, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea will be sharing their experiences on modernizing official statistics in Asia and the Pacific.

ESCAP has also organized a special topic session to showcase developments in the use of big data and other new data sources for official statistics. The session will be held on 23 August and brings together speakers from China, Nepal, Thailand and the Philippines. Australia will chair the session, and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs Statistics Division (UN DESA) will be a discussant.
