Strengthening multimodal transport linkages and finding ways of integration of different modes of transport for efficient cross-border operations is an important trend in the development of the regional transport system in Asia and the Pacific.

Dry ports of international importance, formalized by the Intergovernmental Agreement on Dry Ports, purposed to serve as intermodal hubs, can be instrumental in achieving a greater extent of integration between different modes of inland transport, including railway, road and inland waterways, as well as in facilitating sea-land transport operations.

The recent Fifth Meeting of the Working Group on Dry Ports held on 12-13 September 2023 emphasized the need for developing information tools on dry ports and enhancing the integration of dry ports into multimodal transport corridors and supply chains. It also pointed out the growing demand for enhanced practical cooperation between dry port operators located in different countries and called upon the parties to the Intergovernmental Agreement on Dry Ports to establish a dedicated platform for the coordination and exchange of relevant information on the operations of dry ports.

In response to the request of the Working Group to consider the means for providing support for these initiatives, the ESCAP secretariat is organizing the Expert Meeting on Dry Ports and Multimodal Transport to be held in Bangkok on 6 and 7 December 2023.

The meeting will be conducted in a hybrid format, in the Chinese, English and Russian languages.
