Background

Climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation are amongst the biggest health threats facing Asia and the Pacific. Human health is negatively affected by extreme weather events, environmental pollution, poor air quality, unsafe and insecure food and water as well as various diseases linked to environmental change.  . To address these challenges, a better understanding of the environment-health nexus, and how to operationalize it through the One Health approach, provides important opportunities.

In October 2022, the “Quadripartite” including FAO, UNEP, WHO, WOAH published a One Health Joint Plan of Action (2022-2026) and identified a number of interventions and technical areas that the environment sector can lead towards achieving a better integration of environment into One Health. This side event will introduce the rollout of the Joint Plan of Action in the Asia-Pacific region and discuss the multiple opportunities for countries in the region to manage environment-health risks and deliver co-benefits for advancing multiple SDGs using a One Health lens. A policy guide, entitled “Operationalizing the Environment-Health Nexus in Asia and the Pacific: a policy guide for enhancing health, biodiversity, food system and climate action” will also be presented and launched during the event.

Objectives

  • Advance understanding on the One Health, the important role of the environment sector, and the environment-health nexus
  • Clarify interlinkages among climate, biodiversity, food systems and health outcomes
  • Discuss opportunities and best practices towards operationalizing One Health at country-level and in the region
