The side event on "CST8 Side event: Leaving no one behind: Strengthening statistical inclusion of forcibly displaced and stateless populations at national level" was organized by the Expert Group on Refugee, IDP and Statelessness Statistics (EGRISS) during the Committee on Statistics, Eighth Session.

The event was held on 24 August 2022, from 16:00 to 17:00 hours (Bangkok time), as a Hybrid meeting at the United Nations Conference Centre (MR-H), Bangkok, Thailand.

Panelist presentations

The first part of the session will comprise a presentation led by the EGRISS Secretariat and Subgroup 1 on the EGRISS’ third mandate, which focuses on the implementation of the IRRS and IRIS, and development of the recommendations on statelessness statistics. This session aims to raise awareness of the recommendations and will focus on EGRISS’ collaborative working methodology to develop statistical standards. In particular, the session will highlight how EGRISS’ work centers the perspectives of forcibly displaced and stateless persons to secure their inclusion in development efforts linked to the 2030 Agenda. This will be followed by presentations from technical experts from national statistical offices of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Germany, and the Philippines, who will share their practical experiences of implementing the statistical recommendations, highlight lessons learnt, key achievements, and discuss how traditional data sources can be utilized to include refugees, IDPs and stateless persons in national statistical activities.

Panel Discussion and Q&A

The second part will focus on national efforts to include refugees, IDPs and stateless persons in data collection activities. Panelists will discuss how the international statistical recommendations were translated into practice in their specific context. Additionally, panelists will reflect on the mechanisms used to overcome encountered challenges in work to include these groups in data collection efforts. Furthermore, the panel will explore how data collection activities provide an opportunity to catalyze change in national policies and thus improve the lives of refugees, IDPs and stateless persons.  Lastly, as we look ahead to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda, panelists will discuss areas of potential improvement to further strengthen the inclusion of forcibly displaced and stateless persons in national statistics to ensure everyone is included.
