Interface of the dashboard

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has launched an innovative resource for governments and stakeholders looking for practical ideas to adopt geospatial solutions for sustainable development.

Space data, technologies and geospatial systems are vital in global efforts toward sustainable development.  They can boost efforts to improve, for example, spatial mapping of poverty incidence, early warning for drought and other hazards, air pollution monitoring and greenhouse gas emissions tracking. The Asia-Pacific Plan of Action on Space Applications for Sustainable Development (2018–2030) is a strategic blueprint for countries in the region to harness the applications of these technologies in attaining the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Geospatial Good Practices Database and Dashboard is designed to highlight a diverse range of practices adopted for promoting sustainable development.

The database is a user-friendly, knowledge-sharing tool to explore a variety of good practices being implemented in the Asia-Pacific region, complete with detailed descriptions and hyperlinks for additional information. The database consolidates contributions from ESCAP members, associate members and partners into a single digital platform.

Main interface of the dashboard

The dashboard function facilitates sharing regional progress in implementing the Plan of Action across six priority areas:

  1. Disaster risk reduction and resilience
  2. Management of natural resources
  3. Connectivity for the 2030 Agenda
  4. Social development
  5. Energy
  6. Climate change

The platform currently features over 500 good practices and over 3,000 actions from all over the region which are contributing to 154 out of the 188 actions identified in the Plan of Action.

Interface in action

While applications for disaster risk reduction and resilience remain the most numerous, climate change applications to improve climate mitigation and adaptation efforts are fast emerging and have seen a significant increase in number.

The collaborative nature of the database underscores a regional effort and commitment to leveraging geospatial sciences, technologies and applications for the benefit of all in the region.

The Geospatial Good Practices Database and Dashboard highlights practices from the Asia-Pacific region, but its relevance extends globally. By offering a dynamic platform for sharing knowledge and experiences, the database aims to inspire and illustrate how geospatial solutions can help steer the world towards a more sustainable future.
