5th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development, Seoul, Republic of Korea, 24 to 29 March 2005

Ministers to discuss how to ensure economic growth in Asia and the Pacific does not occur at the expense of environmental sustainability

BANGKOK (United Nations Information Services) --- The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) will convene the Fifth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific (MCED 2005) to be hosted by the government of Republic of Korea in Seoul from 24 to 29 March 2005.

“The theme of the Conference, achieving environmentally sustainable economic growth in Asia and the Pacific, will position national leaders from UNESCAP’s 62 members and associate members to make concrete and strategic commitments towards sustainable development across the region,” said Mr. Kim Hak-Su, UNESCAP Executive Secretary. He added that at the Conference, ministers and senior officials in both environmental and economic portfolios will consider how best to meet this challenge.

The Conference will include many side events including a Civil Society Forum, Eminent Scientists Symposium, Private Sector Forum, Multi-stakeholders Forum-APFED, Water Forum, and Environmental Technology Forum.
