28 April 2004
MINISTERS TO DISCUSS AGENDA FOR THE FUTURE
IN SHANGHAI
BANGKOK(United Nations Information Services)---
The sixtieth session of the UN's Economic and Social Commission
for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) will have the region's future
at the top of its agenda.
"We have a forward-looking agenda on the
table and some of the best minds in the region to discuss how
to tackle the present and future problems of the region,"
said Mr Kim Hak-Su, UNESCAP's Executive Secretary.
It is of special significance for UNESCAP
to hold its 60th session at its birth place. The Economic Commission
for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE), the forerunner of UNESCAP,
was founded in Shanghai in 1947, says Mr. Kim Hak-Su.
The Session with the theme, Meeting the
challenges in an era of globalization by strengthening regional
development cooperation, is being held in two segments:
a Senior Officials Segment from 22 to 24 April and a Ministerial
Segment from 26 to 28 April. It will be held at the Shanghai
International Convention Centre.
UNESCAP is the longest-standing intergovernmental
multilateral economic and social development organization in
Asia and the Pacific region with the widest representation.
The main document for discussion will be the Economic
and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2004. Delegates are
expected to discuss a wide range of issues including implications
of recent economic and social developments in the region and
recommend policy responses.
The highlight of this years session will
be the High-Level Visionary Panel Meeting for Asia-Pacific
2020. The focus of the Panel Meeting will be to identify
the key challenges facing Asia-Pacific towards the year 2020
and identify measures, particularly through regional cooperation,
to meet those challenges.
Included in the many side events will be the Asia
Pacific Business Forum 24-26th April. An Agreement
on the Asian Highway Network is expected to be signed
by about 20 countries.
