HRH Princess Chulabhorn to preside over commemoration of
30 successful years of Thai/UN drug control partnership

UNITED NATIONS INFORMATION SERVICES (Bangkok) -- The Suzuki Orchestra of Turin (Italy) will make its Asian debut at the United Nations Conference Centre on Thursday, 27 June 2002 at 18:00 hours at the first of two performances to promote human security in the Asia-Pacific region. The event, which will be presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn, will also mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2002 and commemorate 30 years of successful Thai Government-UN drug control partnership. A second concert will be given on Friday, 28 June at 15:00 hours at Bangkok's Siam City Hotel. The orchestra is composed of 30 children trained in the Suzuki method of talent development at the Suzuki Music Academy in Turin.

Tickets, priced at 1000/700/500 Baht for the performance at the United Nations and 1000/500 Baht at the Siam City Hotel, are available from Thai Ticket Master Call Centre at 02-262-3837, http://www.thaiticketmaster.com/.

The concerts are being organized by four United Nations agencies, the United Nations Drug Control Programme (UNDCP); United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP); International Labour Organization (ILO); and Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

Sponsors include the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) of Thailand, UNICEF Office for Thailand, the European Union, the Embassy of Italy, Siam City Hotel, Thai Airways, Alfa Romeo, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Zexel Sales (Thailand) Co. Ltd., the Japan Foundation, CMG Central Trading Co. Ltd. (KAWAI), Montri Transportation and Tipco Foods Co. Ltd.

The programme will consist of music with messages in support of United Nations goals for human security and includes a multimedia presentation on child labour and other human security issues. The organizers aim to raise awareness of the role of civil society in fighting the growing threats to human security in the Asia-Pacific region. Proceeds will be donated to the newly-created United Nations Asia-Pacific human security fund.

In a joint statement, the United Nations said, "Human security refers to freedom from the dark forces of globalization, which prey on the weak and vulnerable. Human and drug trafficking, organized crime, labour exploitation, and deadly diseases such as HIV/AIDS are threatening the stability of Asia-Pacific society. To fight against these 'uncivil forces,' all sectors of civil society must unite to raise awareness, share experiences and promote a more secure Asia-Pacific."
