WE'RE HERE TO SERVE

About five hundred dedicated international and local staff make up the ESCAP secretariat headed by the Executive Secretary, Mr. Kim Hak-Su, of Republic of Korea. They ensure the high quality of work in nine substantive and two servicing Divisions, which service the Commission. The substantive Divisions are responsible for the implementation of the six subprogrammes in the daily work of ESCAP.

The UN Family ESCAP works closely with the UN family based in Bangkok. Many of the specialized agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Environment Progrmamme (UNEP) have their regional headquarters in Thailand.

Development Research and Policy Analysis Division (DRPAD) provides analytical and research input into the work of ESCAP and undertake in-depth studies on the region's socio-economic development issues and policies. The Division prepares the annual Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific and publishes biannually the Asia-Pacific Development Journal as well as Development Papers on select development issues.

International Trade and Industry Division (ITID) helps the developing countries carry out recommendations from various multilateral trade negotiations. It reviews issues related to the expansion of both intra-regional and international trade. The Division also helps countries improve trade performance, particularly for economies in transition, and the land-locked, least developed and island developing countries of the region. It helps to promote exports and trade-related investments, with particular emphasis on small and medium-scale enterprises and promotes industrialization and development of technological capabilities of the countries with focus on competitiveness of export products. It advises on industrial and technological restructuring in the developing countries.

Environment and Natural Resources Development Division (ENRDD) works towards establishing policies for environmentally sound and sustainable multi-sectoral development plans. This includes the integration of environmental concerns into the development process, the development of energy and natural resources, the reduction of natural disasters and the promotion of space technology application for development.

Social Development Division (SDD) formulates policies and programmes to alleviate poverty and promote human resources development in the ESCAP region. It promotes the integration into society of marginalized groups, namely the poor, disabled persons, the aged and criminal offenders. It promotes the full integration of women in development.

Population and Rural and Urban Development Division (PRUDD)  promotes integrated approaches to population planning and works to create policies and programmes to enhance population and development, agricultural growth and rural development and to improve the quality of life in human settlements by strengthening national institutions. Special consideration is given to the environment, poverty and sustainable development. The Division also reviews fertility and family planning policies and population structures, including ageing, migration and urbanization.

Transport, Communications, Tourism and Infrastructure Development Division (TCTIDD) helps countries of the region to improve their transport and communication services. It gives advice on how to get socio-economic benefits from the orderly development of tourism, while minimizing its adverse effects.

Statistics Division (STAT) helps countries increase their statistical capacity and improve the demographic, social, economic and other statistics. It collects, processes and disseminates data needed for formulating, monitoring and evaluating development plans, and fosters the use of modern technology in the public sector.

Division of Administration (ADM) provides administrative and support services to the various components and staff of ESCAP within the framework of the system-wide administrative instructions and guidelines set by the Organization.

Programme Management Division (PMD) provides substantive and secretariat services to the Commission, its subsidiary bodies, and the meetings of the Advisory Committee of Permanent Representatives and Other Representatives Designated by Members of the Commission. Other functions include compiling the programme of work and monitoring its implementation.

UNITED NATIONS INFORMATION SERVICES (UNIS) covers the work of ESCAP in particular and the UN in general. It services the media (local and international), NGOs and Governments by disseminating public information products such as press releases and UN reports. It also encourages UN special observances such as UN Day (24 October) World Environment Day (5 June) and International Women's Day (8 March). It has special responsibilities to disseminate UN information in seven countries -- Cambodia, Lao P.D.R., Hong Kong (China), Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

The United Nations Library at ESCAP: serves as a repository for the collection of United Nations and ESCAP documents. It manages the ESCAP Bibliographic Information System (EBIS). ESCAP publishes many academic and popular books. Both offices are open to the public during office hours.
