Examples of results achieved
Last update: 5 February 2008

This page provides examples of the results that the past technical cooperation initiatives of ESCAP have reached in the area of statistics. The excerpts are taken from the accomplishment accounts prepared in the context of the results-based management of the work programme.

"As a result of the subprogramme's efforts to increase national statistical capacity in Asia and the Pacific, national statistical systems are able to produce more coherent data for national and international users and expand the data collection to sectors of the society previously not covered and understood. "

"As a result of the subregional high-level forums on national strategic planning for statistical development, the importance of integrating statistical development in national development planning became more widely recognized. "

"As a result of the Development Account Project on the Interregional Cooperation on the Measurement of Informal Sector and Informal Employment, a multilateral agreement was reached on the methodology to collect informal sector data, for the first time, which is documented in the Unified Data Collection Strategy paper. As a result of the technical missions and capacity building activities, the staff are equipped with the knowledge and expertise to adapt and implement the unified data collection strategy in terms of questionnaire and sampling design and in the case of Mongolia also in data collection. "

"Partly as a result of the project on improving disability measurement, which is implemented jointly with WHO, a number of countries plan to include the disability topic in the next round of population censuses, while others already conducted or have plans to conduct disability surveys. "

"A pool of national experts on disability statistics emerged - providing a valuable source of regional expertise for future country-to-country technical support. SIAP integrated the findings of the project, including those recorded in the manual in its training programme. As recommended by the Committee on Poverty Reduction and other international and regional forums, a new multi-year project (2007-09) for the improvement of disability was developed and has been funded by the United Nations Development Account. "

"The microdata management project is creating awareness of the importance of documenting and protecting census and survey data sets. In particular, the micro datasets contained in resulting national repositories are easier to use, while the identity of census and survey respondents is protected to the maximum extent possible. "

"The interagency efforts on advocating the establishment and use of user-friendly development indicator databases resulted in new DevInfo databases and upgrades, and a wider use of them by different data user groups. "

"The advisory missions increased the awareness in developing countries of the long-term commitment needed not only to improve data collection but also to build analytical capacity. "... ... "The advisory missions on poverty statistics improved methods for generating, analyzing and disseminating data on poverty, MDGs, and various social indicators. They also contributed to the development of statistical master plans; to engendering statistical systems through strengthening participation of women's ministries in statistical activities, and raising gender awareness in national statistical systems. "
