The Workshop was organized primarily
for South Asian countries by UNESCAP in conjunction
with the United Nations Statistics Division
(UNSD) and the Central Statistical Organisation
(CSO) of the Government of India. This was the
second such classifications workshop in the
region; the first
for ASEAN countries was held in Bangkok from
9 to 11 July 2003.
The Workshop focused on economic and social
classifications and their uses in statistics:
- Current implementation
and use of national activity and product classifications
and their relationship to the International
Standard Industrial Classification of all
Economic Activities (ISIC) and the Central
Product Classification (CPC) in the UNESCAP
region;
- Special user needs - adaptation
of classifications in censuses and surveys;
- Future work on ISIC and
CPC - revision plans and proposals, including
discussion of the questionnaire materials
for the 2007 ISIC and CPC revision
- Measures to facilitate
cooperation in the field of classifications,
including coordination of work on regional/subregional
cooperation in classifications
The Workshop had as its major objective the
formulation of coordinated input from South
Asian countries into the process of revising,
by 2007, the ISIC and the CPC. The Workshop
provided an opportunity for countries to review
issues and concerns relating to the implementation
of ISIC.
