Project Activities
   
Projects of the Poverty and Development Division address all dimensions of poverty, MDGs and financing for development including bond markets. They are implemented through a combination of normative and analytical work, policy advocacy and dialogue, capacity building, technical cooperation and knowledge networking. Water and Waste Water for Small Towns 
Develops pro-poor, integrated and participatory water and wastewater management systems in small towns. Participating countries: The Philippines and Indonesia
 
Livelihood Reconstruction after Disasters
Promotes partnerships between communities affected by disasters and private companies to generate income for the most vulnerable groups. Participating countries: India
 
Technical Assistance to the Economies in Transition
Assists with macroeconomic reforms and integration into the global economy, while minimizing the adverse social consequences of the process.
 
Decentralized and Community-based Solid Waste Management
Increases recycling and decentralized composting of municipal solid wastes by informal sector waste pickers and community-based organizations. Participating countries: Bangladesh, Viet Nam, Sri Lanka
 
Capacity-building for External Debt Management in the Era of Rapid Globalization
Increases the capacity of Governments to improve policy framework to better manage external debt through group trainings and technical advice. Targeted countries: Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Nepal.
 
Rural-Urban Linkages
Identifies and disseminates planning practices and local-level development strategies that utilize rural-urban linkages as the basis for poverty reduction initiatives. Participating countries: Cambodia (Indonesia and Nepal for case studies)
 
Housing for the Urban Poor
Increases the capacity of local governments in Asia and the Pacific to address issues of slums and squatter settlements in countries where urbanization and growth of such settlements is a relatively new phenomenon. Participating countries: Cambodia, Mongolia, Nepal, Timor Leste
 
Saemaul Undong
Adapts the rural development strategy used in Korea in the 1970s to Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
 
Human Dignity Initiative
Promotes community-based systems of support, including safety nets, through a conductive policy framework. Participating countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Viet Nam
 
ICT for Rural Development
Transfers the lessons learned in Malaysia on rural community telecenters to other countries in the region.
 
Pro-Poor Public-Private Partnerships
Documents public-private partnerships that provide basic services for the poor, such as access to water, energy or health services
 
Asia Pacific Urban Forum
Periodically, ESCAP convenes local and national governments, civil society and international institutions to discuss urban issues in the region. The fourth edition of the Forum was held in Hanoi (Viet Nam) in 2005
 
Support to Urban Housing Policy
Assists the Government of Cambodia in (i) the preparation of a participatory Urban Housing Policy, and (ii) the formulation of a pilot Housing Programme for the Urban Poor, focused on the secondary towns of Cambodia, to test the implementation of the policy.
 
Marketing green and organic agricultural produce
Highlights the positive link between effective marketing channels for green and organic produce and rural poverty alleviation. Participating countries: Cambodia, China, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand
 
Supporting the Achievement of Millennium Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific (Phase II)
Promotes policies that support the achievement of the MDGs and provides a depository of regional experiences and lessons.
 
Women in Urban Local Government (Phase 3)
Assists national governments to increase the participation and representation of women in local government and to mainstream gender in local government training and research institutes. Participating countries: India, Pakistan, Philippines, Nepal and Thailand
 
Replication of Rural Success Cases
Mobilized successful farmers to train rural poor, rather than relying on professionals or government trainers.
 
Managing the Transition from the Village to the City: Pacific Habitat Agenda
Assists Pacific Island Developing Countries in developing a common plan of action to manage the transition from predominantly rural societies to urban societies
 
Financing for Development
 
Integrating Environmental Considerations into Economic Policy Making Processes
Aims to achieve economic development without destroying the environmental base through identification and usage of good practice examples to enhance Governments’ efforts to achieve sustainable development
