With more inhabitants than any other region and four of the world’s most populous nations located here in Asia, the third pillar in the thematic focus of the secretariat is to identify and address emerging social issues

UNESCAP works to identify emerging social issues, especially those that directly affect the poor and other vulnerable and disadvantaged groups of people in the region by increasing awareness and understanding of how various issues like population ageing, lowered fertility rates, and HIV/AIDS affect each country and the region as a whole. Special emphasis is placed on ways to empower women and to prevent the stigma and discrimination faced by many persons with disabilities.
