Eleventh Meething of the Regional IWG
The Eleventh Meeting of the Regional Interagency Working Group on Information and Communication Technology (IWG) was held at UNCC, Bangkok on 25 February 2008. The Meeting had discussions on programmes and initiatives as follow up to the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society after 5 years (WSIS+5), the preparation to Telecom Asia, and Pacific Connectivity initiatives, in addition to proposals for partnership and cooperation for ICT4D.
The Meeting was jointly organized by UNESCAP, ITU and APT and was attended by representatives of ten United Nations Organizations, International/Regional and Inter-governmental Organizations including the UNESCAP Secretariat.

The National Seminar on Capacity Building for ICT Policymaking was held from 27-28 November 2007 at the Aztelekomā PU in Baku, Azerbaijan. The event is co-organized and hosted by the Department for Information Society Development of MCIT, Azerbaijan, UNESCAP and UNECE.

Joint UNCTAD-ITU-UNESCAP Regional Workshop on Information Society Measurements in Asia-Pacific
The Joint UNCTAD- ITU-UNESCAP Regional Workshop on Information Society Measurements in Asia-Pacific was held in Bangkok from 26 to 28 July 2006. The Workshop was part of the process of identifying an internationally agreed framework of ICT statistical indicators at the global and regional levels. ESCAP, as an active partner of the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development, is contributing to this global effort.
Regional Seminar on Capacity Building for ICT Policymaking in Central Asia
The Regional Seminar on Capacity Building for ICT Policymaking in the Central Asia was held from 11 to 14 July 2006 at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The Seminar was organized jointly by ESCAP and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Kyrgyzstan, the Administrative Department of the President of the Kyrgyzstan, the Public Fund "Interactive Dialogue", Kyrgyzstan, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Kyrgyzstan and the Soros Foundation, Kyrgyzstan. The Regional Seminar was attended by representatives from the following seven countries: Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russian Federation, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The Regional Workshop on Follow-up to WSIS and Integration of ICT Policies and Strategies in the Development Process was held at Bangkok on 29-31 May 2006. The meeting was attended by the representatives of the following countries: Bangladesh, China, India, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam. Representatives from UNCTAD, UNDP-APDIP, ITU and APT also participated in the meeting. .

Ninth Meething of the Regional IWG
The Ninth Meeting of the Regional Interagency Working Group on Information and Communication Technology (IWG) was held at UNCC, Bangkok on 19 December 2005.The Meeting had discussions on the issues related to the follow up and the implementation of the Tunis phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and Regional Action Plan towards the Information Society in Asia and Pacific approved by the Asia-Pacific Regional Conference for WSIS held in Tehran in May-June 2005.
The meeting was jointly organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, and the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT). It was attended by representatives of nine United Nations Organizations, International/Regional and Inter-governmental Organizations and NGOs including the UNESCAP Secretariat.
High-level Round Table on Building Regional Partnerships for the Information Society: Regional Perspectives and Global Dimensions, Tunis, November
The event, co-organized by the UN Regional Commissions, UNCTAD and the UN ICT Task Force was held in Tunis on 16 November 2005, during the World Summit on the Information Society.
ESCAP/ITU Internet Protocol (IP) Symposium for Asia and the Pacific
The Internet Protocol (IP) Symposium for Asia and the Pacific was help 29-30 November 2005, Bangkok, Thailand and was jointly organized by ITU and ESCAP.
A total of 38 participants representing governments, inter-governmental organizations and UN agencies gathered for 2 days in Bangkok to discuss various issues and options for Internet Governance and Internet Protocol in the Asia and Pacific region.
High-level Asia-Pacific Conference for the WSIS
The High Level Asia-Pacific Conference for the World Summit on the Information Society was held in Tehran from 31 May to 2 June 2005, jointly organized by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, UNESCAP, UNDP-APDIP, ITU.
8th Meething of the Regional IWG
The Eighth Meeting of the Regional Interagency Working Group on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was held at UNCC, Bangkok on 19 April 2005. The Meeting had discussion on the activities related to the follow up to the Geneva phase and preparation for the Tunis phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) with major focus on the draft regional action plan towards the information society on Asia and Pacific.
The meeting was jointly organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, and the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT). It was attended by representatives of 12 United Nations Organizations, International/Regional and Inter-governmental Organizations and NGOs including the UNESCAP Secretariat.

Follow up to the First Phase and Preparation for the Second Phase of the World Summit on the Information Society was held from 1 to 3 March 2005 in Kathmandu. Organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Information and Communication and High Level Commission for Information Technology of the Government of Nepal, United Nations Development Programme Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme (UNDP-APDIP) as well as International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the conference discussed Regional Action Plan, Internet governance, financing ICT for development and ICT for knowledge based disaster management from the perspectives of South and South-West Asia.

ICT for Development in Pacific Island Developing Countries was held in Suva, Fiji from 6 to 9 December 2004. This Symposium, organized in cooperation with Pacific Island Forum Secretariat, International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Asia-Pacific Development Information Program (APDIP), discussed ICT for development in the Pacific Island countries on broad issues including Regional Action Plan, Pacific Plan, Internet governance and financing ICT for development.

Information Society and Regional Cooperation in Information and Communication Technologies for Development was held in Bishkek from 16 to18 November 2004< br />Held in partnership with the Government of Kyrgyzstan, UNECE, UNDP and UN ICT Taskforce, it attracted 44 participants from 9 countries (Azerbaijan, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan), 23 participants from 5 UN bodies and international organizations and 20 participants from the private sector, academia and NGOs.

First Regional Conference on follow up to the First Phase and Preparation for the Second Phase of the WSIS and the Expert Group Meeting on Follow-up to the WSIS
The First Regional Conference on follow up to the First Phase and Preparation for the Second Phase of the World Summit on the Information Society was held in Bangkok from 11 to 12 October 2007. It was attended by 46 representatives from 24 countries of the ESCAP region, plus 16 representatives from 12 United Nations bodies and specialized agencies, intergovernmental organizations, other entities and the private sectors. The conference discussed and developed a draft Action Plan towards building a broad-based information Society in Asia and the Pacific.
The Expert Group Meeting focusing on Internet Governance and Financial Mechanisms for ICT for Development, was held back to back with the First Regional Conference. The expert group meeting was attended by 28 representatives from 12 countries of the ESCAP region, plus 31 representatives from UN bodies, specialized agencies, intergovernmental organizations, other entitles and the private sectors.
GMS/Regional Workshop on the Promotion of International Management Standards for ICT Development
The Workshop on the Promotion of International Management Standards for ICT Development was organized from 17 to 19 August 2004 in New Delhi. The overall objective of the workshop was to promote an awareness and appreciation of new and emerging international management standards such as ISO 9000 (Quality Management Standards), ISO 17799 (information Security Management Systems), and the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) could enhance competitiveness and quality in the ICT software and hardware sectors in the GMS and other countries of the region while ensuring the security, privacy and reliability of networked information. The publication Regulations, Policies and Legal Frameworks Related to ICT: International Management Standards for ICT Development in the Greater Mekong Subregion followed this workshop.
ESCAP/ITU Regional Training Workshop on Enabling Policies and Regulatory Frameworks for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Development in the Asia-Pacific Region
The Regional Training Workshop on Enabling Policies and Regulatory Frameworks for ICT Development in the Asia-Pacific Region was organized from 3 to 7 May 2004 in Bangkok. The workshop was a joint activity of ESCAP and ITU regional office in Asia and the Pacific and a follow up activity of the regional seminar on the same subject held in December 2003. The objectives of the workshop was at providing necessary knowledge to develop systematic, comprehensive and articulated ICT policy and regulatory frameworks through training and information sharing activities to enable broad-based ICT development in their respective countries. During the workshop, twelve ICT policy modules were used towards attaining its objectives. The publication Good Practices in Information and Communication Technology Policies in Asia and the Pacific: Promotion of Enabling Policies and Regulatory Frameworks for Information and Communication Technology Development in the Asia-Pacific Region is the result of this workshop and the regional seminar of 2003.
Subregional Seminar on Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Protection of Intellectual Property Rights to Promote Investment and Transfer of Technology, with Special Emphasis on Information and Communication Technologies
The Subregional Seminar on Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Protection of Intellectual Property Rights to Promote Investment and Transfer of Technology with Special Emphasis on ICT was organized in Tashkent from 30 March to 1 April 2004, aiming at increasing the awareness of the importance of intellectual property rights to promote investment and technology transfer, particularly ICT towards bridging the digital divide among and within the countries with economies in transition, and their integration into the economic and social development of Asia and the Pacific. The seminar was attended by participants from China, India, Malaysia, Mongolia and the Russian Federation. The seminar was jointly organized by ESCAP, WIPO and the State Patent Office of Uzbekistan.

The Sixth Meeting of the Regional Interagency Working Group on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was held at UNCC, Bangkok on 9 March 2004. It was jointly organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, and the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), with the main objective to discuss issues pertaining to the follow up to the outcomes of first phase of WSIS held at Geneva in December 2003 and preparations of the second phase of WSIS to be held at Tunis in 2005.
Regional Training Workshop on Information Technology Enabling Legal Frameworks for the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS)
The Regional Training Workshop on Information Technology-enabling Legal Frameworks for the Greater Mekong Subregion was held from 9 to12 February 2004 in Bangkok. The workshop was a follow up activity of the regional seminar on the same subject held in October 2003 in Bangkok. The workshop was attended by representatives of Cambodia, Yunnan Province of China, the Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. During the workshop, the e-business primer developed, Compliance with Information and Communication Technology Related Multilateral Frameworks: Information Technology Enabling Legal Frameworks for the Greater Mekong Subregion, was used to help the participating counties define and determine their requirements for shaping e-business legislation and address such complex issues as: contract validity and enforceability, jurisdiction, privacy, consumer protection, security of transactions, intellectual property, and online fraud in a more in-depth and pragmatic manner.
