Workshop on Broadband and ICT development for improved communications in Central Asia - 21-22 June 2007 - Tashkent, Uzbekistan

The Workshop on broadband and ICT development for improved communications in Central Asia was held on 21-22 June 2007, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. It was jointly organized by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), United Nations Economic Comission for Europe (UNECE), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT), Communication and Information Agency of Uzbekistan (UzACI) and IT Association of Uzbekistan and financed by the contribution of the Government of Japan to UNESCAP. Its goal was to promote and support the cooperation among Central Asian countries in broadband and ICT development.

Representatives of the following countries: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan attended the Workshop; representatives of Japan and Russia participated as observers. Representatives from UNESCAP, UNECE, APT, UNDP, RCC, ITU, ADB, EBRD and the World Bank also participated in the meeting.

The main objectives and expected outcome of the workshop were:

  • Increase of awareness and knowledge on broadband and ICT issues
  • Serve as a forum for discussion of issues on broadband and ICT development in Central Asia
  • Facilitate cooperation among Central Asian countries on ICT development
  • Formulate the strategy to enhance regional cooperation on ICT development, if possible
