Papers and Presentations

The Consultative Meeting for the Establishment of a Regional Knowledge Network of Rural Women Cooperatives was held at the United Nations Conference Center, Bangkok on 23 and 24 August 2007. The Meeting was one of many activities of the project entitled “Establishment of sustainable e-business and network for co-op enterprises for women in rural communities”, which is supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea and being jointly implemented by the Information, Communications, and Space Technology Division and the Emerging Social Issues Division of UNESCAP.

The project aims to empower women in rural communities through building capacity in entrepreneurship and in the use of ICT as a tool for marketing their agricultural products. In particular, the project seeks to establish a knowledge network of women cooperatives that will serve as a means to strengthen their entrepreneurship skills, enable them to share information, experience and knowledge regarding women entrepreneurship and business development, and provide outlets for marketing their products through e-business.

The objectives of the Meeting were to:

  1. Consult with women cooperatives’ stakeholders, including governments, associations of cooperatives, international organizations and NGOs, on the establishment of a knowledge network of women agricultural cooperatives in the Asian and Pacific region;

  2. Share experience and good practices of cooperative business and networks;

  3. Identify training needs of women agricultural cooperatives to develop entrepreneurship and e-business; and

  4. Discuss a pilot implementation of a model e-business centre in a selected women agricultural cooperative.
