The Regional Working
Group on Remote Sensing, GIS and Satellite-Based Positioning
has the major objective of developing a self-sustaining
mechanism for promoting regional cooperation on remote
sensing, geographic information system (GlS) applications
and satellite-based positioning for sustainable development.
The Regional Working Group also provides a forum for promoting
technology transfer and exchange of information and experience
among participating countries through sharing of information,
conducting cooperative projects and participating in training
programmes.
The national contact points of the Regional Working
Group on Remote Sensing, GIS and Satellite-Based Positioning
are nominated by the national focal point for RESAP or
by the national coordinating organization, and act under
the general coordination of the national focal point for
RESAP. Each member country of the Regional Working Group
on Remote Sensing, GIS and Satellite-Based Positioning
may have up to three national contact points representing
government, industry and academia, including heads of
national agencies coordinating space sciences and technology
applications.
Thailand currently host the Coordination Office of the
Regional Working Group on Remote Sensing, GIS and Satellite-Based
Positioning for the four-year term 2000-2004, at the Geo-Informatics
and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) in Bangkok.
GISTDA is also hosting the web-page on a joint project
between FAO and ESCAP, development and applications
of a multi-purpose environmental and natural resources
information base for food security and sustainable development
(ASIACOVER)
.
The Deputy Director of GISTDA takes the role of the Coordinator
