Sustainable Social Development in a Period of Rapid Globalization: Challenges, Opportunities and Policy Options

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

At its fifty-seventh session, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific decided that the theme topic for the fifty-eighth session, in May 2002, would be “Sustainable social development in a period of rapid globalization: challenges, opportunities and policy options”.

Under the overall direction of the ESCAP Social Development Division, an Interdivisional Working Group prepared the detailed outline for this study and reviewed its progress at various stages. The Advisory Committee of Permanent Representatives and Other Representatives Designated by Members of the Commission also reviewed the study outline and content.

Mr. C.P. Chandrasekhar, Ms. Jayati Ghosh, Ms. Pak Po-Hi and the Rural Development Section of the Population and Rural and Urban Development Division of ESCAP drafted some of the chapters and sections of the study and the secretariat acknowledges their contributions with gratitude. An expert group consultation on the study was organized at Bangkok from 23 to 25 January 2002. The chapter authors and experts from the International Labour Organization and the International Council on Social Welfare as well as from several divisions of the ESCAP secretariat participated in the consultation and provided valuable guidance on the scope, content and main messages of the study.

Mr. Michael Chai served as a short-term staff member of the Social Development Division from December 2001 to mid-March 2002 and shouldered the main burden of revising and converting the different chapters and sections into a unified study. His contribution to the final study was invaluable. The secretariat is grateful to Mr. John Loftus for editing the study and to Ms. Naduni Nanayakkara for finalizing the manuscript for publication.

The photographs on the cover were provided by the Human Resources Development Section, Social Development Division.
