Migration Patterns and Policies
in the Asian and Pacific Region

PREFACE

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific organized the Ad Hoc Expert Group Meeting on Migration and Development: Opportunities and Challenges for Poverty Reduction in the ESCAP Region at Bangkok from 28 to 30 November 2001. The Meeting was a part of the preparatory activities for the Fifth Asian and Pacific Population Conference, held at Bangkok in December 2002.

The main purposes of the Meeting were to:

  • Review migration trends and patterns in the region, with a focus on international migration, and their implications for poverty reduction;
  • Examine the policies and programmes on migration that have been adopted in the various countries;
  • Make specific recommendations to better understand and manage migration flows and contribute to the well-being of individual migrants and society as a whole.

The Meeting was attended by a number of senior officials and experts from selected countries of the region. The present study is based on background papers presented at the Meeting. It is hoped that the results of this study will be useful for planners, policy makers and researchers.
