| The
International Institute for Population Sciences at Mumbai
(Bombay), which is the focal point for India in Asia-Pacific
POPIN, is a "deemed university" and an autonomous
organization functioning under the administrative control
of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government
of India. The Institute also serves as the secretariat for
the South Asia POPIN subregional network.
The Institute has a team of over 35 highly qualified faculty
members and administrative and support staff who run seven
departments, namely: Department of Mathematical Demography
and Statistics, Department of Fertility Studies, Department
of Public Health and Mortality Studies, Department of Migration
and Urban Studies, Department of Population Policies and
Programmes, Department of Development Studies, and Department
of Extra Mural Studies and Distance Education.
Drawing attention to the logo adopted by
India to promote the small family norm, this
classical dancer makes a point about the future -
lndia's population will exceed that of China unless the
population growth rate is slowed.
The lnstitute's Population Data Centre was set up with
the objective of maintaining the data sets procured from
various local and national demographic sample surveys conducted
throughout the country. The Centre obtains data from the
National Family Health Survey of India (NFHS) as well as
the Demographic Health Surveys (DHS) of countries where
such data are collected.
To store and disseminate information, the Centre uses
CD-ROMs. The use of CD-ROM technology enables the Centre
to provide detailed documentation of IIPS research work
in an easy-to-use form. Plans are under way to copy and
store reproductive and child health (RCH) project data,
which provide information on health for all sample districts
in India.
The Institute's homepage on the lnternet is made available
off-line through CD-ROM media created by the Data Centre.
It may thus be seen that the Institute has taken advantage
of the benefits of the information age. Networking advances
on campus enable the faculty and students to access lnternet
facilities. Also, all census and population-related data
can be accessed through data storage facilities at the Centre.
Further, the Institute uses e-mail to facilitate the transmission
of data and information both nationally and internationally.
Following the ICPD conference, held at
Cairo in 1994, India adopted a new policy approach called
Reproductive and Child Health, which is a significant change
from the earlier maternal and Child Health approach. Under
the new approach, contraceptive behaviour is placed in a
much wider context where the quality of care component needs
special attention.
The Library of the lnternational Institute
for Population Sciences is well equipped to serve the needs
of the scholars and other users involved in lndia's population
programme.
The Reproductive and Child Health interventions that are
being implemented by the Government of India are expected
to provide better quality services than previously and achieve
multiple objectives. The government is attempting to not
only re-orient the programme and service providers' attitude
at the grassroots level, but also strengthen the services
at outreach levels. The new approach requires decentralization
of planning, monitoring and evaluation of the services.
