From Tokyo, news has come of the appointment of Mr. Yasushi Akashi as the fifth President of the Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP). Mr. Akashi has had a distinguished career spanning four decades within the United Nations, starting from his appointment in 1957 as the first Japanese United Nations administrator. Mr. Akashi has also served as Under-Secretary General, consecutively for Public Information, Disarmament Affairs, and Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
