Implementation
of Fifth APPC’s Plan of Action to be reviewed in 2008
Attending the recently concluded third session of the Committee
on Emerging Social Issues (see page 2),
delegates from 20 countries in Asia and the Pacific recognized
the importance of regularly assessing policies and programmes
and recommended that a mid-point review meeting on the implementation
of the Plan of Action on Population and Poverty, adopted at the
Fifth Asian and Pacific Population Conference on Population and
Poverty be convened in 2008.
It also urged the convening in the next few years of a regional
review of the implementation of the Bejing Platform for Action
adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women.
Held in December 2002 in Bangkok, the Fifth APPC adopted by consensus
a Plan of Action making strategic recommendations in 12 areas
pertaining to poverty reduction; including population, sustainable
development and poverty; international migration; internal migration
and urbanization; population ageing; gender equality; reproductive
rights and reproductive health; HIV/AIDS; etc.
