Ms. Hania Zlotnik has been appointed the new Director of the United Nations Population Division, effective 1 February, following the retirement of Mr. Joseph Chamie at the end of 2004. A native of Mexico, she received her PhD from Princeton University (statistics and demography). For over 22 years she has been a United Nations staff member, serving as Chief of two different sections of the Population Division and, most recently, as Chief of the Demographic Analysis Branch. An internationally recognized expert on migration, she is also the Vice-President of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population.
Mr. Paul Cheung, formerly the National Statistical Coordinator for Singapore and Chief Statistician of the Department of Statistics, has been appointed the Director of the Statistics Division at United Nations Headquarters. Mrs. Leow Bee Geok has been appointed Acting Chief Statistician for Singapore following Mr. Cheung’s departure.
Dr. Peter Piot, head of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), was recently reappointed for another four years to continue the battle against the global pandemic. Co-sponsors of UNAIDS are ILO, UNICEF, UNODC, UNDP, UNFPA, UNESCO, UNHCR, WFP, WHO and the World Bank.
Mr. Peter J. Donaldson was appointed President of the Population Council in January. He succeeds Ms. Linda Martin whom he had replaced on a temporary basis in July. He is well known in Asia, having worked for years in Thailand and the Republic of Korea. In addition to membership in many professional associations, he remains a member of the advisory committee of the Institute of Population and Social Research, Mahidol University, Bangkok.
