From New York, news has come of the retirement of Mr. Joseph Chamie,
Director, Population Division, DESA, effective from 31 December.
Mr. Chamie received his doctoral degree in sociology, majoring
in the field of population, from the University of Michigan. He
has worked in various regions of the world, specializing primarily
in Asia and Africa. Among others, he has conducted research and
taught at universities in the United States of America and elsewhere.
During his career with the United Nations, Mr. Chamie has been
responsible for a variety of activities, including estimates and
projections of population, assessing national population policies,
determinants and consequences of population trends, population
and development interrelationships, and international conferences
on population and development. He has also completed numerous
studies on a variety of topics such as fertility, marriage, family
planning, population estimates and projections, ageing, urbanization,
international migration, and population and development policy.
Following his separation from service, Mr. Chamie is planning
to engage in new career challenges in the field of population
and development.
