Mukdahan is located in northeastern Thailand and most of the area is a high plateau with dense forests in the west. The eastern part of the province is mostly agricultural areas. Mukdahan comprises 7 districts: Muang Mukdahan, Nikhom Khamsoi, Kham Cha-ee, Don Tan, Dong Luang, Wan Yai, Nong Sung and has eight tribes of Thai people, each of which has its distinct tradition and culture. These eight tribes are Phu T'ai, Yu, Kha, Soe, Kar Saek, Kula and Thai-Lao.

North:      Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom
South:     Yasothon
East:       Lao PDR
West:      Kalasin and Roi Et
