Sukhothai which literally means “Dawn of Happiness” has an area of 6,596 square kilometers.  It is about 427 kilometers (267 miles) north of Bangkok.   Sukhothai  was founded in 1238 and was the capital of Thailand for approximately 120 years.

Sukhothai is administratively divided into 9 districts: Muang Sukhothai, Kong Krailat, Khriri Mat, Ban Dan Lan Hoi, Si Samrong, Sawankhalok, Thung Saliam, Si Satchanalai and Si Nakhon.
