Objective
We are committed to developing ageing indicators
and response criteria. In April 2004, ESCAP embarked
on a project to develop rapid participatory assessment
tools to help governments in their responses to the
challenges of population ageing. With these tools
in hand, field research was carried out in Sri Lanka
and China to assess the impact of ageing policies
and programmes in rural communities and laying the
groundwork for the development of a comprehensive
matrix of indicators, the purpose of which was to
help governments formulate better strategies to address
ageing issues. The application of this matrix of indicators
was discussed in an expert group meeting held in Bangkok
in March 2005. To demonstrate its national application,
the Government of China invited ESCAP to organize
this workshop to train professionals and practitioners
involved in ageing issue on the relevance of the matrix
to policy and institutional dimensions with a view
to improve accessibility to social services to poor
old persons.
