Ageing
|
UNESCAP focuses on the development and strengthening
of policies required to address population ageing. It
assists Governments in strengthening their policies
and programmes on ageing, mainly in the following major
areas: (a) social protection/social security and pension
systems; (b) health and well-being into old age, such
as health care, community-based support and services
for older persons; and (c) development of enabling and
supportive environments for ageing, including housing,
transportation, etc. UNESCAP promotes the concepts of
active and productive ageing throughout one’s
lifecycle and of health and well-being into old age.
In 1999, which was the International Year of Older Persons,
governments in Asia and the Pacific endorsed the Macao
Plan of Action on Ageing for Asia and the Pacific –
the very first regional plan of action on ageing. A
year later, in 2000, the Guidelines on Implementation
of the Macao Plan of Action on Ageing for Asia and the
Pacific were adopted and translated into four official
UN languages: Chinese, English, French and Russian.
Regional surveys on national policies and programmes
on ageing were conducted by UNESCAP in 2000 and 2002.
In follow-up to the Madrid International Plan of Action
on Ageing adopted by the Second World Assembly on Ageing
(April 2002), governments in the region met at the “Asia-Pacific
Seminar on Regional Follow-up to the Second World Assembly
on Ageing” (Shanghai, China, 23-26 September 2002)
and adopted the “Shanghai Implementation Strategy:
Regional implementation strategy for the Madrid International
Plan of Action on Ageing 2002 and the Macao Plan of
Action on Ageing for Asia and the Pacific 1999”.
UNESCAP accords high priority to promoting the realization
of the Shanghai Implementation Strategy for the Madrid
and Macao Plans on ageing, through technical support
and assistance to members and associate members of UNESCAP,
close partnership with NGOs and other members of civil
society and all concerned actors. Regular regional surveys
on ageing will be conducted, in line with the Macao
Plan and the Shanghai Implementation Strategy. |
