YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT:

The Women and Development Division was established in 1962-1964 in response to women’s needs to participate in development at all levels.

LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY:

The division has three aims as provided for by the government, and the recent endorsement of the Solomon Islands national women’s policy.

OBJECTIVES AND FUNCTIONS:

Objectives:

* To promote an increased and more effective role for women in decision making and national development
* To improve the availability and circulation of information and resources relating to the welfare of women and the family unit
* To facilitate women's training programmes to develop appropriate knowledge and skills for women

Roles and Functions:

* Translate the National Women’s Policy into a National Women’s Plan of Action.
* Coordinate the implementations of the Policy with all other organisations.
* Formulate policies, programmes and plans on Women and Development in accordance with the SIG Policies.
* Coordinate all women’s programmes and projects at the national level and disseminate information to all focal points working with women. In addition will be responsible for the planning, management, monitoring and evaluating women’s programmes and projects.
* Consult with NGOs, Nation Council of Women (NCW) and the Churches regarding government policies and programmes on Women and vice versa.
* Coordinate research, reviews, evaluation and data collection on issues of concern to women.
* Identify needs and support special initiatives for women where existing institutions and agencies are unable to meet.
* Work closely with the NCW in promoting the issues of concern to women and encourage its roles as a voice and a forum for women and by women.
