The Women’s Desk was set up in 2002
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:

OBJECTIVES AND FUNCTIONS:
• Serves as the national focal point on policy matters
and for international cooperation pertaining to women
• Acts as the Secretariat to the Inter-Ministry Committee
on CEDAW and facilitates work on the implementation of the
Convention
• Works with local women’s groups to address
women’s issues
MAJOR ACTIVITIES:
• Initiated work with 3 key women’s bodies
in Singapore, namely, the Singapore Council of Women’s
Organisations, the Women’s Integration Network under
the People’s Association and the National Trades Union
Congress Women’s Committee, to address pertinent issues
facing women in Singapore, in particular, re-skilling of
women for life-long employability, work-life balance and
financial literacy.
• Initiated and will be carrying out the first ASEAN
Committee on Women (ACW) Information and Communication Technologies
(ICT) Workshop
- To be held in August 2004
- Objectives:
a. Increase awareness on the role of governments in facilitating
wider usage of ICT among ASEAN women and girls.
b. Enable participants to produce a draft programme concept
for the Ministries or agencies to introduce ICT tools to
their population, with an aim to facilitate ICT access by
women and girls.
• Developed and maintains a website on women which
contains information on CEDAW, Singapore’s Initial
and Second Reports to the Committee on CEDAW and sex disaggregated
data.
• Continues to act as the Secretariat to Singapore’s
Inter-Ministry Committee on CEDAW.
• Continues to participate at upcoming regional and
international meetings such as the Commonwealth Women’s
Affairs Ministers Meeting (WAMM) and the APEC Gender Focal
Point Network meetings.
• Others – Singapore has nominated Dr Anamah
Tan to the UN Committee on CEDAW (Elections in 2004)
