YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT:

1982 - Aia Maea Ainen Kiribati (AMAK) or the National Women Federation of Kiribati was financially supported by the Foundation of the South Pacific (FSP) for the period of 5 years.

1986 - AMAK an autonomous body functioned on its own through subscriptions of its affiliated members as well as aid from donor countries and other international non-government organizations.

1995 - As the resolution of the National Women Conference in 1995 AMAK became a Government Organization up to date.

LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY:

The outcome of the 1995 National Women Conference in 1995, resolved that the National Federation for Women become a government organization, that is a non-autonomous body. Government would look after and monitor women’s affairs relating to the implementation and development of their skills, knowledge and standard of living culturally, socially and economically.

OBJECTIVES AND FUNCTIONS:

* Provide women and various agencies with information and training opportunities
* Research on women’s needs
* Develop or upgrade the status of women
* Assist women groups in the process of finding funds for needed projects
* Coordinate and monitor women’s activities at the national level
* Conduct training workshops at the national level
* Produce and disseminate information for skill training
* Conduct workshops for outer Island women
* Issue a magazine three times a year
* Provide a weekly 20-minute radio programme
* Draw up the National Women Development Plan
* To work and liaise closely with the Council of Women

MAJOR ACTIVITIES:

Plans and major activities for the next 5 years will revolve mainly around the 10 issues contained in the Women Development Action Plan out of the 13 issues that was raised at the Veijing Conference. The issues include: Health, Education, Violence Against Women, Economic Empowerment, Decision Making, Fisheries and agriculture, Family and Cultural Values, Mechanisms to Promote the Advancement of Women, Information System on Women’s Situation and Women and Environment.
