| Background
The
workshop sought to encourage countries in the ESCAP
region to realign their macroeconomic policies; to
reassess their institutional, legal and regulatory
mechanisms; to reform social security provisions;
to adopt and integrate gender responsive policies
and programmes on social security to meet the needs
of the informal sector. It also aimed to
facilitate the exchange of ideas on innovative social
security and protection schemes including insurance,
involving the tripartite participation of the private,
public sectors and women, in the design and implementation
of the schemes. Finally, it solicited
expert views and opinions on existing and possible
innovative social security protection schemes for
women in the informal sector, including home based
self-employed, sub-contractors, petty traders and
vendors, and rural agricultural workers
