EXPERT GROUP MEETING ON STRATEGIC PLANNING FOR THE INTENSIFICATION OF REGIONAL, SUB-REGIONAL AND INTER-REGIONAL COOPERATION TO COMBAT TRAFFICKING IN WOMEN AND CHILDREN
Bangkok, 18-19 December 2003

Background

The objective of the meeting was to draw up a clear regional strategy for the intensification between regions, sub-regions and inter-regions, of cooperation with regard to prevention of trafficking in persons, protection of and assistance to victims of trafficking.

It was hoped that the meeting would explore effective mechanisms and methodologies for the implementation of all the regional action plans adopted, thus far. Many of the Regional plans and instruments recommend similar actions. The difficulty has been, for various reasons, in moving from the formal stage of agreements to implementation. This meeting hoped to examine the ways in which UNESCAP and other partners may foster regional, sub-regional and inter-regional cooperation for the implementation of the international and regional legal obligations and political commitments.
