The Gender and Development Section of ESCAP is organizing
an expert group meeting on the Convention on the Elimination
of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)
for national women's machineries and senior law-making
officials. The meeting, "Effectively Integrating
and Implementing the CEDAW at the National Level to
Promote the Human Rights of Women", will take
place in Bangkok, Thailand from 18-20 July 2007.
The expert group meeting will recommend innovative
strategies for using CEDAW's international human rights
treaty norms to promote gender equality in the Asian
and Pacific region through the creation of normative
jurisprudence at the national level. It further aims
to increase awareness and knowledge on the part of
participating senior policy and law-making officials
of the concepts and procedures for using CEDAW at
the domestic level to promote equality and non-discrimination
as well as measures and strategies to integrate CEDAW
into national legislation and development policies. Emphasis
will be placed on the protection of women from all
forms of violence.
The meeting will provide a regional overview of CEDAW
and its implementation by Member States and will examine
effective methods and strategies for overcoming the
obstacles to domestic level implementation in the
areas identified by the CEDAW Committee in their comments
on country reports. In particular:
- Constitutional reform provisions or legislation
to incorporate the CEDAW principles on non-discrimination
and equality of all men and women into national
laws;
- Complete review of all laws that discriminate against women, repeal of laws that discriminate, and enactment of laws to protect women against all forms of discrimination and violence, including domestic violence;
- Positive measures to promote the participation of women at the political level through greater involvement in decision-making institutions such as national assemblies and local governments.
Participants in the expert group meeting will include distinguished academics and representatives of national machineries for gender equality, international and non-governmental organizations, and government institutions.
