PROVISIONAL AGENDA
Agenda
item 1 : OPENING OF THE MEETING
A
programme for the opening will be announced in due
course.

item 2 : ELECTION OF OFFICERS
The
meeting will elect its bureau, which will include
a chairperson, vice-chairpersons and a rapporteur.

item 3 : ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA
The
agenda will be adopted on the basis of the provisional
and annotated provisional agenda.

item 4 : OVERALL REVIEW OF REGIONAL IMPLEMENTATION
OF THE BEIJING PLATFORM FOR ACTION
Progress
made in the regional implementation of the 12 critical
areas as identified in the Beijing Platform for Action
will be discussed. This would highlight the progress
achieved, best practices, gaps and obstacles faced,
and future course of action. Discussion would also
focus on the common factors which are presently hampering
women's advancement. The representative of each member
and associate member will make a statement on the
implementation in her/his country. Seven minutes will
be allocated to each statement. United Nations bodies
and agencies and other inter-governmental organizations
will also deliver statements.

item 5(a) : ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN
In-depth,
substantive discussion with resource persons will
be held on issues/concerns relating to women's economic
empowerment. Issues such as the impact of globalization
on women, the Asian economic crisis, women in poverty,
women's economic participation, unpaid work of women,
and the situation of rural women would also be discussed
under this agenda.

item 5(b) : RIGHTS-BASED APPROACH TO EMPOWERMENT OF
WOMEN
Issues/concerns
related to women's rights as human rights would be
discussed. Violence against women, trafficking in
women and children, and the Convention on the Elimination
of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)
would also be addressed.

item 5(c) : POLITICAL EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN
Issues/concerns
relating to women's participation in politics, government
and decision-making process will be discussed. Issues
related to sociocultural and institutional barriers
which hamper women's political empowerment would be
also discussed.
Agenda
item 5(d) : STRATEGIES FOR EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN
Emphasis
would be given on creating and enabling environment
for empowerment of women covering monitoring and evaluation
of the implementation of the Beijing Platfrom for
Action and the linkages with accountability and governance,
building partnerships, and capacity building for gender-
mainstreaming.

item 6 : ADOPTION OF THE REPORT
The
Meeting will consider and adopt its report on Friday,
29 October 1999 for submission to the Commission on
the Status of Women (CSW) in the year 2000 as the
regional input to a special session of the General
Assembly entitled "Women 2000: gender equality,
development and peace for the twenty-first century",
which is to be held in New York from 5 to 9 June 2000
to review implementation of the Beijing Platform for
Action.
