Dear colleagues,
The initiative to establish the Asia-Pacific Water Forum (APWF), which was launched at the Fourth World Water Forum in Mexico City in March 2006, was a major boost for the water sector and is expected to be a historical milestone in regional cooperation among countries and especially among people working in the water resources sector in Asia and the Pacific.
As the founders of the E-network on SPM, FAO and UNESCAP consider the APWF to be a golden opportunity to bring in the E-network new information, new ideas and most importantly practical experiences at different levels of management of the water sector and across the region.
From that perception of regional cooperation, FAO and UNESCAP would like the E-network to be deeply involved in supporting the preparation of the Asia-Pacific Water Summit. In the coming months, we will bring to you various opportunities for your participation in the formulation of issues or proposals for possible submission to the AP Water Summit.
As you may be able to obtain more information from the APWF website (www.apwf.org),
FAO and UNESCAP will be involved in the preparatory process of the AP Water Summit. In this first message on APWF, we would like to invite you to support us in our efforts to identify key issues, practical experiences, good practices and recommendations on the "Monitoring of Investment and Results" in the water resources.
As the leader of Key Result Area 4 on "Monitoring of Investment and Results" UNESCAP has received strong support of FAO-Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in carrying out its planned activities in the coming months. UNESCAP has also discussed and received positive indicative responses from various sister UN agencies as well as other international organizations, such as Japan Water Forum, Korea Water Forum, IWMI, GWP-South-East Asia, etc. UNESCAP has also discussed this subject with various national water resources agencies and has received positive response. We would like to link the E-network on SPM with these regional cooperation efforts so as to provide a wider framework for mutual benefits and to enhance consensus among the regional stakeholders.
We intend to address the following three categories of monitoring:
-
Monitoring public and private investments
-
Monitoring reforms and trends
-
Monitoring MDG achievement
It is our intention to bring active participants of this e-network to our regional workshop on the above subject, scheduled to be held in June/July 2007.
We will come back to you with more details soon. At this moment, we will welcome any feedback via email (see below) or online via the forum "Linking the E-network on SPM to the Asia-Pacific Water Forum".
We also intend to use the website for preparatory activities for Theme 3 - Water for Development and Ecosystems - for which the World Conservation Union (IUCN) is the lead organization, and FAO is the co-leader. A specific note for Theme 3-related activities will be posted later.
Thank you in advance for the kind cooperation.
Yours sincerely,
Ti Le-Huu (ti.unescap@un.org) & Thierry Facon (thierry.facon@fao.org)
