Mining
Laws for Economies in Transition
A
Training workshop on drafting implementation
rules and regulations for mining laws of transitional economies was held
at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok from 18 to 20
December 2001. The workshop
presented an opportunity for participating countries to meet, exchange
views and address common problems
related to catalyzing foreign direct investment in the mineral
sector by creating a competitive investment regime focusing mainly on
the legal and fiscal issues.
In
addition, the topics addressed at
this training workshop allowed the participating countries to deliberate
on issues that impact directly on mineral resources development, an
important sector for the development of transitional economies.
The
training workshop was attended by 17 participants from Cambodia, China,
Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mongolia, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet
Nam.
Participants
at the workshop addressed
some of the most important issues faced
by their countries in mineral resource development. They called for
greater support from ESCAP in providing training and assistance to their
countries in the area of administration and regulation of the
exploitation of mineral resources, while maintaining important
environmental and social safeguards.
