Sabbatical Leave Programme
In the summer of each year, staff members are invited to apply for the sabbatical leave programme. If approved, the sabbatical leave programme enables staff to spend up to four month to conduct status-of-the-art research, enhance dialogue and build contact between the United Nations and other organizations engaged in related work world-wide.
IMPORTANT:
ODSU is now accepting applications. Staff members are required to submit a confirmation of acceptance from the receiving institution together with the application form.
Applications should be submitted through the Supervisors and the Chief of the Division to Chief of ASD/HRMS, by 5 October 2007.

Individual Training Programmes
In addition to the sabbatical leave programme, funding for individual training programmes is
provided if the subject has direct impact on the work of staff member, its division and the
organisation in general. Interested staff members are requested to submit their applications at
the end of each year, for approval by the Executive Secretary. Besides the fit of the proposed
subject with the work of the staff member and that of his or her work unit, one of the factors
determining the approval is the performance of the requesting staff member. Hence, it is
planned to increasingly use staff members’ participation in individual trainings as a reward for
outstanding performance and as a strategic investment.
Individual training courses are usually shorter than programmes under the Sabbatical Leave
Programme. In 2005, funding was provided for a number of trainings. Firstly, a statistics
course for a staff member in the Statistics Division; secondly, a course on “Women in
Leadership” for a staff member in the Emerging Social Issues Division; thirdly, an on-line
course on Geographic Information System Development for a staff member in the Transport
and Tourism Division; and fourthly, a summer school programme in macroeconomics for a
staff member in Transport and Tourism were funded by UNESCAP
All staff members who fulfill the eligibility criteria are invited in November of each year to submit their application to ASD/HRMS, through their supervisor and division chief. Final approval is based on the Executive Secretary's decision and availability of funds.
