Expert Group Meeting
on the Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Least
Developed Countries for the Decade 2001-2010, 14-16 February 2006,
Phnom Penh
The Programme of Action for the Least Developed
Countries for the Decade 2001-2010 of the Third United Nations
Conference on the Least Developed Countries, Brussels, 14-20 May
2001 was endorsed by the General Assembly in its Resolution 55/279
of 12 July 2001. The General Assembly, in its Resolution 59/244,
subsequently decided to hold a comprehensive review of its implementation
at its sixty-first session in 2006. In preparation for the comprehensive
review, regional commissions were requested to assist the least
developed countries in undertaking reviews of the implementation
of the Programme of Action in their respective regions.
In line with these Resolutions, the Economic
and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the Office
of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries,
Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States
will organize a Regional Review of the Implementation of the Programme
of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2001-2010
in Bangkok on 14 and 15 March 2006. The Regional Review will consider
the following:
- Progress towards attainment of the Millennium Development
Goals through the implementation of the Programme of Action;
- Implementation of regional support measures in: (a) financing
for development; (b) trade, migration, and technology transfer;
(c) environment, and (d) security; and
- Coherent national, regional and international measures to
ensure attainment of internationally agreed development goals
by the least developed countries.
In preparation for this Regional Review, ESCAP
organized an expert group meeting in Phnom Penh from 14 to 16
February 2006. During this meeting, the national focal points
from the 14 least developed countries in the Asian and Pacific
region developed a draft consensus on issues related to the regional
implementation of the Programme of Action. This draft consensus
will be considered for endorsement at the Regional Review.
