“Women, Men and HIV/AIDS: Responding to the Challenge”
Side event to the Commission session, 3 September 2003
|
| As a special side event to the Fifty-ninth Commission session,
the UN Interagency Thematic Working Group on Women’s
Empowerment and Gender Equality (TWG-WEGE) organized a panel
presentation “Women, Men and HIV/AIDS: Responding to
the Challenge” to highlight the gender dimensions of
HIV/AIDS. The presenters included Carol Livingston from UNAIDS-SEAPICT,
Madhu Bala Nath, UNIFEM-Regional Advisor on HIV/AIDS, Tony
Pramualratana of the Asia Business Coalition on AIDS, and
Chansuda Praphananugoon from Power of Life/Whistle Home. The
speakers provided statistics on the scope of the epidemic,
and gave innovative examples of good practices on how to combat
the spread of the virus and work with communities affected
by HIV/AIDS. They shared insightful perspectives and a powerful
personal testimony. The panelists inspired the audience, which
included about 40 participants from the Commission, NGOs,
UN agencies and UNESCAP, to recognize the gender aspects and
take collaborative action to combat HIV/AIDS. |
